Written by Geoff Johns; Art and cover by Ivan Reis and Oclair Albert
We pick up where we left off last time, with The Flash, Atom, and Mera battling Black Lanterns at the JLA Headquarters. Flash tells the others that they need to hold down the fort on Earth until Hal Jordan can stop the source of the Black Lanterns. There is also a caption showing Black Lantern Power is at 93.55 %.
We then get a huge splash page featuring the Black Lantern JLA and all of the resurrected JLA villains about to attack the Flash. As the Flash is being chased around the HQ, Firestorm gains control of Black Lantern Firestorm and lets the team know that the rings are coming for the Flash and he needs to get away from Earth. His control is short lived as BL Firestorm comes back and attacks with BL Aquaman. The Atom tells the team to hold on as he shrinks them all and pulls them through to a 911 dispatch center and away from the Black Lanterns. We then get a quick scene in Gotham City where BL Azrael is killing people and we find out that the Scarecrow fears nothing since he has used his gas on himself too many times. BL Azrael does not even notice him and pushes by. On to Metropolis, where the Calculator is telling Lex Luthor about the situation. Luthor lets him know that it is every man for himself and we see the battlesuit in the background. Then back to the JLA as the Flash tells The Atom and Mera to find Alan Scott and see if he can help with the Black Lanterns. As those two arrive to a JSA Black Lantern battle, the Flash heads around to as many heroes as he can to give them an update on the situation and the way to destroy the Black Lanterns. The scene moves to Coast City where the power levels are now at 97.77% and the Black Hand is standing outside of a mortuary. We then move back to the JSA battle as Alan Scott explains his ring is different than the other Green Lanterns and it might not work the same. He hits the BL’s with a shot and then Mera floods them. We then cut to Atom Smasher, Atom and Damage as they encounter Black Lantern Al Pratt the original Atom. As Atom Smasher fights his father, the Atom shrinks down and rips him apart from the inside. They turn around to see Damage’s heart being ripped out by Black Lantern Jean Loring as the power levels hit 100%. With that, Barry Allen feels the change in the air and contacts the other Flashes to get everyone to head to Coast City. As he gets there a huge Black Lantern power battery explodes forth and Black Hand says Nekron Rise, Coast City Rise. Nekron is then standing there with a mini Black Lantern battery on a staff as he says “Barry Allen you owe me your life, you all do.” as the issue ends.
Another great issue put together by Johns. The artwork had a great feel and flow to it, as the dark scenes were perfectly contrasted by the brightness of the heroes. Overall this issue gets 4 out of 5 stars and you should
Put It On The Stack.
