April 23, 2009 in Batman, DC, News, Reviews, Spoiler
Written by Neil Gaiman; Art by Andy Kubert and Scott Williams
Part two of the story “Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader” picks up where it left off in part one. Bruce Wayne is still viewing his funeral and a mysterious stranger is helping him analyze everything that is going on around him. We see more heroes and villains speak about how Batman died, each with a different story of the event. Bruce then starts to realize
that all of these are possible ways his life ends and that none of them are true. He says to the mysterious stranger that he realizes that he is not dead yet, but that death is close. There reply is that Death is closer than you think. It is then revealed that the person he has been conversing with is his mother (or Death in that guise). She tells him about how all stories have an ending, and that one day, even if these are not true , Batman will have an ending as well. She then reminisces with him about his childhood and how he was such a happy child. She also mentions his favorite book and that he needs to learn to say goodbye for now to Batman and just enjoy his life. The story ends with Bruce saying goodbye to Batman and his world and shows the birth of young Bruce Wayne. Overall this was an amazing ending to the story. Neil Gaiman crafted what is the perfect “last” Batman story. The artwork by Andy Kubert is great throughout as he moves into different styles to fit the era of the character that he is drawing. This book earns 5 out of 5 Batmen and is definitely one you should:
Put It On The Stack.
