Batman #681 Batman RIP Review -SPOILERS
November 28, 2008 in Batman, Comic Books, DC, Reviews, Spoiler
The Final Chapter of Batman RIP kicks off with Batman still trapped in a casket buried alive where he has a flashback about being poisoned and dialoguing about always being prepared for every situation. We then cut away to see Robin fighting Pierot and the Swagman. He is rescued by the League of International Batmen who decided to help out Batman. We then cut back to Dr. Hurt going into detail about how he will exhume Batman just about the time he is delusional from oxygen depravation and have his final bit of fun then.
The Black Glove members then return into Arkham to find that the Joker is still waiting there. He then offers to make a bet about Batman escaping and wants to join the Black Glove to do so. They say all positions are full so he kills one of the members to make room for himself. We then see that a failsafe device has been activated to allow the Batcomputer to overtake the Arkham facility. At this time the book cuts away to show Nightwing escaping from an attempt to crack his skull with a pick. We then pick back up with the Batman flashback where he outwits his would be poisoner and then we cut to present day with Batman emerging from the ground. He then storms Arkham and reveals he knew the whole time the Jezebel Jett was part of the group. Nightwing then joins him in disposing of the henchmen as Batman heads out to take on Dr. Hurt. We then show the Joker driving off in an ambulance and he is then knocked off the bridge ambulance and all by Damien and Alfred driving the Batmobile. We then cut to Batman and Dr. Hurt as Hurt shoots Batman. He then claims to be Dr Thomas Wayne , Batman’s father. Batman calls him a liar and says that he knows he is Mandrake Pierce the star of "The Black Glove". Dr. Hurt then tells him that Batman must agree to serve the Black Glove or he will reveal that his Father, Mother, and Alfred were drug addicts, perverts, and criminals. Batman refuses and without his cowl, jumps at the helicopter that Dr. Hurt was attempting to escape in. The next scene we see is the copter crashing in an explosion into the water below and everyone assuming all passengers are dead. Talia shows up saying the she will take revenge on those that did this and we see Nightwing holding the cowl in his hands. The story then cuts away to show Jezebel Jett on a private plane and she receives a mysterious phone call and then her plane is attacked by Man-Bats. We then get the cut away to 6 months later showing a thug that says that Batman and Robin are both dead, so he has nothing to worry about. Then a Bat signal shines through the window and we see a bat shape. The final scene is Martha, Thomas and Bruce Wayne leaving the Mask of Zorro movie and we see Joe Chill in the background waiting to kill them. Overall there are some great art panels and the story does wrap up although a little bit contrived. It does appear that there is much more to this story that will be told later on. It earns 4 out of 5 Batmen.
